This formally unusual book was based on intensive research but also on direct practical experience. Thus there is no pretence that it is not a personal statement by the author who, as an ethnomusicologist, practising musician and teacher, has been involved since 1978 with facets of Indonesia’s musical culture.
The struggle of Indonesia for independence and consequently for national identity is continually opposed to the local and ethnic identities which have developed over time.
In music education western music (theory), or what is understood as such, has in fact, fatally, been declared to be a national musical idiom, in an attempt to confront or escape the dilemma of choice in the face of local diversity.
Where can a contemporary music scene actually begin when the problems of local, national and international must still be considered as unsolved? Against the background of these tensions, this book ranges across diverse themes and genres.

Since 2003 Dieter Mack has been Professor of Composition at the Musikhochschule in Lübeck. He has been working on Balinese music since 1978 From 1992-1995 he was Guest Lecturer at IKIP Bandung in Jakarta.
