Das biographische Material für seinen „Coriolan“ entnahm Plutarch einer einzigen historiographischen Quelle, den „Antiquitates Romanae“ des Dionysios von Halikarnass. Die vorliegende Monographie arbeitet das Bild, das der Biograph von Cn. Marcius Coriolanus entstehen läßt, im Vergleich zu dieser Vorlage heraus.
Indem diese Untersuchung sich am Fortgang des „Coriolan“ bis hin zur Synkrisis mit dem Parallelprotagonisten Alkibiades orientiert, analysiert sie sowohl die rhetorischen Strategien Plutarchs als auch die ethisch-moralische Terminologie, welche der Biograph zur Charakterisierung seines Protagonisten benutzt. Diese Begrifflichkeit wird im Kontext des „Coriolan“, im Hinblick auf den „Alkibiades“, wie auch das übrige Corpus der plutarchischen Bioi analysiert. Leitende Fragestellung dabei ist: Wie gestalten sich die kommunikativen Beziehungen zwischen dem Protagonisten und seiner Umwelt, im besonderen die Interaktion mit dem Demos?
Diese Untersuchungen wollen einen Beitrag dazu leisten, die Biographik Plutarchs in ihrem Spektrum von psychologischer Analyse und moralischer wie politischer Bewertung zu erhellen.

Plutarch took the biographical information for his ‘Coriolanus’ from a single historiographical source, the Antiquitates Romanae of Dionysius of Halicarnassus. This monograph investigates the picture that the biographer of Cn. Marcius Coriolanus creates in comparison with this model.
By focusing on the progress of ‘Coriolanus’ to the syncresis with the parallel figure of Alcibiades, this study analyses both Plutarch’s rhetorical strategies and the ethical and moral terminology which the biographer uses to characterise his protagonists. This concept is analysed in the context of ‘Coriolanus’ with reference to ‘Alcibiades’ and to the rest of the corpus of Plutarchan bioi. The guiding question behind this is: How are communicative relationships formed between the protagonist and his surroundings, particularly in his interaction with the demos?
The aim of the study is to contribute to the elucidation of Plutarch’s biographical work in its spectrum of psychological analysis and moral and political evaluation.
