This monograph was first published in 1897 and is like a handbook of its subject in its coverage of all major aspects of the culture and daily life of the pre-Islamic Bedouin in individual essays which are concise but rich in content. The great contribution of the orientalist Georg Jacob was that he evaluated and included in his work all available sources both early and modern. Jacob saw this work as a preliminary study for a depiction of the whole of Islamic culture, with the aim of making the study of the national traditions of Islamic peoples into a comparative academic discipline.
