Auguste Mariette (Boulogne 1821 - Kairo 1881), Gründer und erster Direktor des ägyptischen Nationalmuseums und der ägyptischen Altertümerverwaltung, leitete die Ausgrabungen an den wichtigsten Ruinenstätten Ägyptens. Der hier vorliegende
Nachdruck des Inventarkataloges führt alle beweglichen Stücke der Ausgrabungen in Abydos auf. Intention des Autors war die Bekanntmachung der ausgegrabenen Monumente durch eine jeweils kurze, aber prägnante Beschreibung und vorlagengetreue Abschrift
der hieroglyphischen Texte. Der Katalog ist somit als Materialsammlung konzipiert, die Ägyptologen eine reiche Quelle für weitere Forschungen bietet.
Die Funde von Abydos bestehen hauptsächlich aus Stelen und Begräbnisstatuen. Wie Mariette betont, sind die Gräber und Tempel der Stadt, auch begünstigt durch die geographische, oberirdische Lage, schon früh geplündert worden. Die großartig abgebildeten steinernen Zeugnisse reichen bis zur VI. Dynastie zurück und
können als religiöse, historische und geographische Dokumente ihrer Zeit angesehen werden.
Auguste Mariette (Boulogne 1821 - Cairo 1881), founder and first director of the Egyptian National Museum and the Egyptian administration of antiquities, led the excavations at the most important ruins in Egypt. This reprint of the inventory catalogue lists all mobile pieces from the excavations in Abydos. It was the intention of the author to publish the excavated monuments by short but to-the-point descriptions and to copy the hieroglyphics
in a way which is faithful to the original. The catalogue is thus designed to be a collection of material offering Egyptologists a rich source of further research.
The Abydos findings consist mainly of pillars and funeral statues. Mariette stresses that the graves and temples of town, partly as a result of their geographic situation above the ground, were plundered early. The wonderfully depicted stone relicts go back to
the 6th dynasty and can be considered as religious, historical and geographical documents of their time.
